Fitness Trainers Gone Bad - Craig Titus

(This is one of my older, favorite blogs that I decided to dust off and revise.......)

Fitness Training 'should' be a respectable line of work.  Unfortunately, sometimes our career choice is viewed to be on the same moral plane as a politician's executive assistant, a snake oil salesman or an unaccredited massage parlor attendant! This is usually because of the behavior of certain individuals that ply the wellness trade in a dubious manner.
I have created a special category for that small minority of Fitness Trainers that have left
our profession with a certain taint. I call it the Fitness Trainer Hall of Shame!!!

Craig Titus was a world class bodybuilder. He was a USA Professional champion and competed in the Mr. Olympia, the Super Bowl of bodybuilding competitions. He was a Personal Fitness Trainer to some celebrities. One of his clients was a guitarist for the world's foremost heavy metal band.
(hint: they were a 'Motley Crew' of musicians) He was married to Kelly Ryan, a world class competitor in women's physique contests. Craig Titus. was a constant feature in muscle magazines. He was under contract to sports supplement companies. Kelly was popular for her gymnastic talent used as part of her presentation routine. She was also a favorite of the supplement companies.
Craig Titus. had that California beach look with blonde hair often tied back in a ponytail.
He had muscles like a Greek god. He had the facial features of a movie star. The man reeked of charisma from every pore. He was my favorite bodybuilder of that era. He looked more natural and aesthetic than the current crop of juiced up, sinew popping, vein bulging, mega monstrosities of pro bodybuilding.

Craig and Kelly in happier times.

Craig in competition form

Craig and Kelly seemed to be the epitome of  success in bodybuilding, Fitness Training, business, and life!
Unfortunately, there was also evidence of some troubling character traits.
  • Craig Titus. had a reputation for being a sore loser. He once walked off the stage in protest after finishing only second in a bodybuilding pro qualifier.
  • Craig  was known to go into an angry tirade towards the judges if his wife, Kelly Ryan, was the recipient of a less than expected contest result.
  •  He had a reputation as a 'bad boy' with a hot temper, a fast decadent lifestyle and a roaming eye as a serial womanizer.
  • In 1995 Craig Titus. was arrested for dealing ecstasy, a party drug.
  • In 1997 he broke probation and was arresting for possession and use of steroids. He did a short stint of jail time for that digression.
  • He supplied steroids and human growth hormone to his heavy metal rocker client from the band Motley Crew. He even gave the injections.
  • I doubt that it was any secret that our golden maned Greek god was also pumping his own body with questionable enhancement products.
Then the Craig T. story gets very bizarre. Craig and Kelly had a woman living with them who was supposedly their 'personal assistant'. The woman, Melissa James, was found dead in a burnt out car in the desert near the couple's Las Vegas home. Melissa Jane's body showed evidence of morphine intoxication, possibly administered against her will. She also appeared to have been severely beaten and tasered. When suspicion fell on Craig and Kelly, they went on the lam, becoming fugitives from the law.
They were caught and were charged with murder! Apparently one or both of them killed Melissa James  and then they tried to cover up the crime. The motive was unclear. Rumors flew of a methamphetamine and booze fueled  love triangle that finally went bad. Another theory was a jealous Kelly killing Melissa James. because she suspected an affair between the assistant and Craig. Other unproven rumors involve Melissa James stealing from her hosts and when they confronted her it turned ugly.
Craig's version was that he was breaking up a fight between the two women but not knowing his own strength ended up killing the unfortunate assistant. They were confused and fearful due to the methamphetamine use and not helped by the possible hormonal mood swings caused by anabolic steroid abuse.
There's more! Supposedly contract hit men were contacted about killing witnesses before the trial!  Eventually Craig and Kelly both pled guilty to some lesser charges as follows:

Craig Titus. : 2nd degree murder
                        Kidnapping
                       Arson
Eligible for parole in 2026 -Still in prison

Kelly R. :      Arson
Battery with a deadly weapon leading to bodily harm
                      Denied parole in 2011.
Out on parole as of 2017 after serving  9 years
(Kelly's mother died of a heart attack while Kelly was awaiting trial)

There are those that would have liked to see the death penalty for such a heinous crime. Then there are the more forgiving types that would like to see a paroled and rehabilitated Craig T. competing in Master Bodybuilding competitions in 2027.
Was Craig Titus a bad person or was he a victim of the effects of drugs and rage. There may be an argument for this. I worked as a bouncer in some of Edmonton's less reputable bars and observed that:
  • Booze in enough quantity can turn the nicest person into an annoying boor
  • Street drugs can turn the same person into an out-of control hooligan
  • Booze, and street drugs can turn this person into a violent devil.
  • Throw mood altering hormones such as anabolic steroids into the mix and you can have a pumped up, raging Anti Christ!
  • Anabolic steroids have been a controlled substance in the U.S.A. and Canada. This has made such substances more difficult to obtain from medical doctors. The modern sources are often the same same criminal groups that supply illegal drugs such as methamphetamine, ecstasy and cocaine. I can buy into the theory that someone such as a Craig T. could fall under the influence of these accompanying illicit drugs with dire consequences. Steroids have been known to cause 'Roid Rage'! Who knows what 'Roid Rage' and 'Meth Mania' can morph into?
It should also be noted that professional bodybuilding is not about health and fitness!  It is an extreme lifestyle rife with chemical enhancement and extreme dieting.

You may buy into the theory that Craig Titus was under the control of demonic substances and unresolved anger management issues. Nevertheless, he is still an example of how the profession of Fitness Trainer can be painted with a taint of sleaze. Supplying drugs to clients is a dangerous game!  Being involved in a horrific killing is as bad as it gets!
Craig Titus falls far short of the ideal  Fitness Trainer role model. His potential was swallowed up by
excessive vice and poor judgement.

Why Pro Wrestling is Booming and Amateur Wrestling is Fading Away

A short time ago, I noticed an internet news report. One of Canada's university wrestling powerhouse teams was getting its varsity funding cut. This cut applied to both the men's and women's squads In most cases this is a death knell for that particular program! There may be a residual wrestling club surviving on bingo or casino funding, if they are lucky. There may still be access to the wrestling facilities for such a club if the university feels benevolent. However, most likely the glory days are gone. Many of the successful varsity wrestlers may transfer to one of the dwindling number of universities that still fund amateur wrestling. Others may find another sport.
A former club level wrestler and aspiring Fitness Trainer (who could that be?) used to volunteer as the announcer at an annual university wrestling tournament. He always tried to interject some humor and make each match sound like it would be a life and death struggle of epic proportions. A certain well respected coach sent one of his athletes to tell the announcer not to keep giving nicknames to his team's wrestlers. He felt that is was sending the wrong message to the audience.
What audience? The bleachers were mostly filled with other wrestlers or coaches. As far as I know, no one got offended and walked out because of the announcer's attempt to interject some fun into the event. Who knows, maybe some new fans would show up if there was more focus on marketing a show worth watching for some entertainment value as well as just the athletic spectacle.
Was it just coincidence that this was the same coach whose wrestling program lost its funding years later? He had coached both men and women wrestlers to Olympic team berths. He put his heart and soul into the sport. However amateur wrestling still languishes in obscurity compared to more mainstream sports. Could it be that creating the product is no longer enough? If the product is not promoted properly, could it become extinct?

Don't get me wrong. There are pockets of the country where the sport thrives at the school and club level.. However, losing a varsity program in such a pocket does not bode will for the future of the sport.

Unfortunately, in Canada amateur wrestling fans seem few
and far between

An acquaintance dragged me out to a professional wrestling event in Ottawa last fall. It was a level or two below the WWE.  I went reluctantly. Most amateur wrestling alumni have little use for this circus type road show that shares the name 'wrestling' but has little else in common except the exaggerated throws. Of course, I reminded my acquaintance that these bouts were choreographed and therefore were entertainment rather that sport. His inevitable response was to point at a pro wrestler with cartoon-like muscles and exclaim "You tell that to him - face to face!"
After a few hours of gratuitous entertainment, I must admit that I was at least won over by the way that this product was marketed. I came away with some observations:
  • This was a small venue but it was crowded to full capacity. At amateur wrestling events, there is no need for reserved seated. The empty seats are in abundance.
  • The pro event had fathers out bonding with their infant sons -  and daughters. There were groups of young people on dates. I have rarely seen this demographic at amateur wrestling events.
  • Die hard fans wore masks, or were made-up to look live their favorite wrestlers. People carried posters and banners. Fans chanted slogans! Crowds at amateur wrestling events can be  vocal but are rarely that demonstrative.
  • The pro wrestling venue had a craft beer concession and a top line pizza booth nearby. Try scoring something other than greasy french fries and watered down pop while being a spectator at an amateur wrestling meet.
It's not because of a lack of effort. Canada has tried to promote their Olympic medalists, especially the women. However, once the Olympics fade from memory so does the short lived wrestling glory.
A new promotional model is needed! There is stiff competition from online gaming and extreme sports to attract the youthful demographic. A great sport is losing ground. Maybe it's time to move on from stifling well meaning volunteer announcers and get the real word out to the population! Actually, it will take more than just volunteers. It may be time to learn a few tricks from the pros!

Sure, its a gaudy circus but it thrives in a tough fan market

My Diploma in Personal Fitness Training - At Last!

It only took me 21 years!
In 1997 the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton held the first classes of its year and a half Personal Fitness Training certificate program. It was felt back then that there was a void of proper accreditation and training for Fitness Trainers. Some Fitness Trainers had Physical Education or Kinesiology degrees. Many had certificates from weekend courses. Many Fitness Trainers had no accreditation at all.
At the time, I happened to be in a period of career transition and the NAIT program was a fresh start.
It was an intense year and a half of courses with the reward of a college certificate, and national and provincial accreditation. Some confusion ensued with the general public and potential clients. How were they to differentiate between a certificate earned in a year and a half of intense study or a certificate earned for a weekend course?
NAIT wisely decided to add another semester and turn the Personal Fitness Trainer program into a college diploma program. The program is now also available online as internet studies. I always wanted to update but never found the time. Finally almost 2 years ago I made the decision to go for it. After 20 months of online work involving video presentations, reports,  case studies, and exams, my diploma finally arrived in the mail.

My Personal Fitness Trainer Certificate from 1998

There were some memorable highlights of my latest return to the world of scholastic endeavor:

  • I had to submit all of my assignments through the college internet system known as Moodle. A task that would take a child of the Millennium 2 keystrokes to complete often took me hours or days with many failed submission attempts along with the accompanying fits of blasphemous rage. Fortunately, the instructors understood the trials and tribulations of the pre-tech generation and were quite fair and benevolent.
  • I ran a 40 meter sprint for the Sports Performance course. Since I had a total hip replacement in 2006, I was quite pleased with my running time of around 6 seconds.
  • The next day when I got out of bed my hamstrings locked and I almost fell flat on my face. The obvious culprit was a pair of underactive Gluteus Maximus muscles.
  • A video of my sprint was to be submitted. Due to technical issues the camera was on still picture mode. That meant that I had to redo the sprint.
  • On the sprint rerun 3 days later I strained my quadriceps muscle. At my age, there is only 1 full out sprint per year left in the body.
  • Dating sites to meet Russian women popping up on my my screen as I was about to post a shared exercise group discussion admittedly caused me some anxious moments of stress. I don't know how my laptop was exposed to such a questionable link!!!!
  • My laptop froze during one of the online exams. Fortunately it kicked back in after a minute but not before I thought my heart tissue had gone into cardiac arrest mode.

The final product. My hard earned diploma!

I wisely only took one course at a time. Given my work demands, any more might have been overwhelming. It took 20 months to complete a full semester worth of 5 courses.
I am glad that I did it. I am thankful that it is over.  That which does not destroy me  - strengthens me! (Neitzsche)
Now I feel more confident in my knowledge and skills for sounding off on my blog rants. In the world of sports and fitness, there is much ranting that needs to be done.

Until next time ,  keep fit!

The Best Training for Power Production?

Believe it or not, I do read more than just comic books and muscle magazines. This was an interesting study that I came across that would be useful for fitness trainers that work with athletes.

The Effect of Six Weeks of Squat, Plyometric, and Squat / Plyometric Training on Power Production
Purpose
Adams et al from Oregon State University performed this study in order to determine if squat training, plyometric training and squat/plyometric training could improve physical power production as measured by use of the vertical jump assessment.
Subjects
The study used 48 subjects divided into 3 groups of 16. The subjects were intermediate level weight trainers with no more than a year of being in a weight room environment. The subjects had minimal exposure to plyometric training or power training.
Protocol
The subjects were tested before and after for power production using a vertical jump assessment as per the Sargent jump test or the CSEP PATH. The subjects performed 3 jumps from a stationary parallel squat position with full recovery between each jump. The best score counted as the official height achieved. The 3 groups were put on a 7-week training program consisting of 2 workouts per week. The squat group trained with parallel squats.  The plyometric group trained with depth jumps, double leg hops and split squats. The squat/plyometric group used the same exercises together with the same intensity but a reduced volume.
Results
All 3 study groups improved with statistical significance on the final vertical jump assessment. The squat group improved by an average of 3.30 cm. The plyometric group improved by an average of 3.81 cm. The squat/plyometric group showed the greatest improvement with an average increase of 10.67 cm. The study concluded that squats and plyometric training can both improve vertical jump height. The greatest improvement occurs through a combination of squat training and plyometric training. Further research is needed to determine conclusively if this vertical jump increase corresponds to greater explosive muscular power in other activities. It seems likely that it would.

For safety purposes, you would want to assess your client for any muscular imbalances or dysfunction before putting them on either a heavy lifting or plyometric program.  Corrective exercises might be in order before moving on to power or strength.

Sports Pundits Sound off on Positive Doping Tests

Definition: Pundit - an expert who speaks publicly on a subject.
What has been happening in sport lately has caused me to become retrospective.

  • When sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for the steroid Stanozolol after shattering the field in the 100 meters at the 1988 Olympics, sports pundits exclaimed that this would clean up the sport of track and field.
  • It did - but only in Canada. The shame for one of our own getting caught led to a judicial inquiry and drastic enforcement within Canadian sport.
  • Lance Armstrong's confession to Oprah about using banned substances during his 7 Tour de France victories  led cycling pundits to say that the downfall of Armstrong would clean up cycling.
  • Last November, a more recent Tour winner, Chris Froome tested positive for Salbutanol, a controlled asthma medication. The pundits must be right. The sport is cleaner but most of the riders now have asthma and need blood oxygen enhancing meds.
  • When Marion Jones got caught up in the Balco performance enhancing drugs scandal, pundits said that this would clean up track and field.
  • The Russian track and field team was barred from the 2016 Olympics for allegedly running a state sponsored sports doping program. According to the pundits, this will clean up the sport of track and field. Is this starting to sound repetitive?
  • Close to 50 Kenyan distance runners have failed retroactive drug tests since 2012. Some have been Olympic Champions. Let me say it.....This will clean up track and field!!!
  • The 3rd place finisher in the men's division of the last CrossFit Games tested positive for SARM's -Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator- a new wave anabolic agent. This will clean up CrossFit!  I like saying that!
  • At least in Professional Bodybuilding they do not deny that the gargantuan champs are not juiced. When one of them drops dead at 35 years of age there are no bodybuilding pundits claiming that "This will clean up bodybuilding!" It is just back to business as usual.
It is time to be realistic. The occasional sacrificial lambs or even even the banning of full teams is only a band aid -not a cure. In many parts of the world poverty and desperation may drive someone to seek a chemical edge
. However, mostly is a far deeper human condition called greed that runs rampant in humanity. We can control it but never eliminate it. It is a malfunctioning of the soul.
Until Next Time......Keep Fit
