20 Years of Personal Fitness Training at NAIT

Has it really been that long?  Twenty years ago last September was the first ever  Personal Fitness Trainer (PFT) course of study at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. September 16 was the reunion date. I eagerly attended even though it meant traversing Canada. Here are some of my comments and observations:

  • It was, purportedly, the first ever college level course of its kind in Canada.
  • The intent was to fill the void between Fitness Trainers with a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology /Physical Education and those with lesser educational credentials
  •  Back in those days, anybody could call themselves a Fitness Trainer and charge clients money to in return for fitness guidance.
  • In fact, any gym rat or muscle head can still call themselves a Fitness Trainer but they are less likely to be hired by a fitness center let alone get liability insurance.
  • The curriculum consisted a year and a half plus of subjects related to anatomy, physiology, functional fitness, resistance training, aerobic conditioning and sports first aid topped off by some nationally recognized certificate exams.
  • We also were required to do 100 practicum hours of Personal Fitness Training with volunteer clients/guinea pigs. Fortunately, there were no fatalities!
  • Out of an initial class of 40, we were soon whittled down to 32 through attrition. Studying anatomy can take its toll on the sponge like organ within the human cranium!
  • It wasn't an easy ride and I pushed myself quite hard. I did enjoy the experience.
  • I was actually somewhat sad when the course was all over and everyone went their separate ways.

Couldn't they have at least pretended to look proud of me?
That's me, kneeling, surrounded by some of my NAIT instructors past and present.

It hasn't been the easiest 20 years since then. There were  bumpy roads, some misdirection and even road blocks along the way.

  • Alberta was still bouncing back from another boom and bust oil price recession. We were still in the bust phase. People didn't have deep pockets for luxuries.
  • At first our certification was not recognized at city of Edmonton recreation facilities and some other fitness centers. Fortunately that has changed.
  • Even though we studied for a year and a half for our NAIT PFT certificate, the general public could not always differentiate between that and a weekend course certificate.
  • NAIT has since turned it into a 2 year college diploma course. I am currently updating. It is time to recondition the sponge like organ of my cranium for textbook jargon.
  • Some prospective clients thought we offered free services or worked only for tips.
  • Many fitness center managers (even still) looked at Fitness Trainers as expendable cannon fodder rather than fitness professionals that they should be working with to best use their talents.
  • It must be a character flaw. I also have a problem with some fitness center manager half my age trying to treat me like 'the lowly hired help' I'm barred from the premises of one or two such clubs for holding my ground.
  • If you are weak in sales, align yourself with a Fitness Trainer who is strong at it. (Thank you Greg Harvey of FitNwell)
  • Some of my clients were also great referral machines as well as super business mentors. Those clients are irreplaceable. (Thanks Charlie and Mordi)
  • After 20 years I still  have my hand in the game as a sports/fitness blogger. Thanks for reading!
The reunion was enjoyable. Only 1 other classmate from the first year attended. He is also an instructor in the program. I was hoping to catch up with more of the first year tribe but people move on and people get busy with their lives. Time goes and you have to go with it. At least let's do it with a pumping heart and contracting muscles!

Walking Through the Big Apple

I just finished a holiday week in New York City. Since I am a reluctant traveler on crowded subways,  I decided to try  and travel on foot to as many of of the major attractions as possible. Here were some highlights of my power walking adventure.

Hash House Harriers Run in Manhattan
The Hashers are a world wide running club. They congregate at a pub and run following a chalk trail to another pub. Upon reaching the destination, silly ditties are chanted, food is consumed and grog (often alcoholic) is swilled. The 'hash' comes from a term derived from a meat/corn/potato dish, not from the oily substance from the cannabis plant. Since I have a hip replacement, I skipped the 5-mile running route and power walked the 2 miles to the final pub destination. It was a great social and fitness event. My travel buddy, Ken, and I had also walked for hours around the 42 Street and Times Square area earlier that day. Afterwards we walked around for hours in a pouring rain trying to find the right subway back to our Air BnB in East Harlem.

Manhattan chapter of the Hash House Harriers.
Visiting guest is front and center.
 East Harlem to Battery Park:
I started on Manhattan's far Upper East Side.
I hiked some S-shaped routes through the length of Central Park. I saw great scenery and much wildlife such as turtles, squirrels, and a great big Rattus Norvegicus that almost scurried over my foot. I eventually made it to Battery Park on the south shore of Manhattan where I watched the Statue of Liberty in the distance as I sat in the sun with a burger and a cold ale. My legs were tired but my feet were especially sore where they dorsiflex.

View to south from Empire State Building.
I walked to the far waterfront.

And I started way back past those skyscrapers.

This journey left my legs feeling trashed and there were still more big walks to come. The cumulative leg fatigue would add up throughout the week.

 Brooklyn Hash House Harriers Run:
My travelling buddy, Ken, is a big time Hasher so he talked me into doing another one 2 days later in Brooklyn.  In the Manhattan run, I explained that I had a hip replacement and would rather walk directly to the final pub destination that run following a chalk or flour trail. At the Brooklyn Hash Run, every one took off running and left me. The 'hare' who sets the train yelled some barely comprehensible address to me as he ran by.  I had the street name right in my head but not the number.
To quote the Billy Joel song 'You May be Right'
"I was stranded in the combat zone
I walked through Bedford Sty alone."  (Glass Houses, 1980)
The garbled directions sent me to a dangerous looking, less desirable area of town. The address that I thought I had heard was non existent. It was also after sunset.
"Thats great! That's just great!" I yelled into the streets. Looking and sounding somewhat unhinged was probably not a bad thing in this vicinity. On tired legs, I backtracked to the pub that was the starting point. of the run. The staff there didn't know who the Hash runners were or where they had run to.
As I sat down and ordered up some grog and food, I realized that I had my travel buddy's cell phone. He had given it to me so that he could run unimpeded by electronic gadgetry.
That also explained the lack of response to my score of profane cell phone calls that had started up once I had arrived at the non existent wrong location. I also had the keys to our lodgings. I was no longer the lost wanderer - he was!
He made it back to the lodging slightly after me. Fortunately he had kept his subway card on him.
Disturbingly, few of the Hash runners seemed concerned that the newcomer had never arrived. Chalk them off of my return visit list. However, it was another notch in the gun for my N.Y. walking adventure.

The cheating side of town!
I didn't get lost in Brooklyn. They gave me the wrong address.

Walkers galore on the Brooklyn Bridge
As penance for deserting me on the cheating side of town, I dragged Ken with me on a walk from the former World Trade Center, around Battery Park and
across the Brooklyn Bridge.
My walking muscles were getting a great workout.
The bridge was jam packed with pedestrians, mostly tourists.

During this week in New York City, I saw the major sites and did it mostly on foot. Throw in some workouts in various fitness centers and I was able to play tourist and still be physically active.  Despite all of the marathon walking days, I still had an extra speed gear in case I needed it for self preservation. Fortunately I never needed it. All was safe and friendly. Even the Central Park  Rattus Norvegicus had a smile for me.

Dallas McCarver - Another Pro Bodybuilder Dies Young

Dallas McCarver was a mountain of a man!  Dallas packed up to 300 pounds on to his muscular physique. His nickname was Big Country'. He finished in 8th place at the 2016 Mr. Olympia contest which is the pinnacle for professional bodybuilders. He was proclaimed to be the future of  pro bodybuilding - its next mesomorphic messiah!
Sadly, Dallas McCarver passed away recently at the age of 25. Supposedly he choked while eating and died as a result. Months earlier at the most recent Arnold Classic Competition in Australia, Dallas collapsed onstage during group posing and had to be helped off the stage. He was said to have suffered an episode of bronchitis. Autopsy results have yet to be made public and speculation can be off target but a recurrence of a bronchial spasm could possible be a choking factor.
People choking to death on poorly swallowed food is not uncommon. That's why CPR and Emergency First Aid courses teach the Heimlich maneuver. Most of us have had the frightening experience of having food go down the wrong tube and having to cough it up. It can happen to anyone.
However, my suspicion  towards professional bodybuilding being a risky lifestyle always lurks in the inner recesses of my brain.

  • The modern pro bodybuilder attains size and muscularity that seems unattainable to the normal person.
  • Professional bodybuilding is rife with the use of substances including anabolic steroids, human growth hormone, insulin (for non diabetics), diuretics,  amphetamines, and even synthol oil for injecting into the arms.
  • The severe dieting to reduce subcutaneous fat and get 'ripped' can take a toll on the body.
  • Carrying around unnaturally massive amounts of muscle can also take a toll on the body.
  • Trenbolone is a steroid that has been associated with causing bronchial spasms in some users.
In the late 1970's and early 1980's bodybuilding was on a roll. It's champion superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger was also a movie star and media darling. Then bodybuilding went astray! The judges started to award the unnatural sized mega muscle monsters. The more natural looking physique did not place in the professional contests. Of course the mega muscle monsters built their bodies with more than pumping iron and protein powder. Pro bodybuilding has regressed to being considered a circus sideshow act rather than a legitimate 'sport'.
Now it seems that there are significant health consequences including mortality within the pro bodybuilding demographic. Dallas McCarver may have just unfortunately died an accidental death. However the pro bodybuilding link to health issues and sudden fatality merits further investigation.

Rich Piana - Another Pro Bodybuilder Dies Too Soon

Rich Piana was the new breed of professional bodybuilder!

The 'new breed' of professional bodybuilder lives in a new world order:
  • They are monstrously muscled, gargantuan sized leviathans.
  • Size overpowers symmetry.
  • They do not look natural.
  • Often they no longer compete. Rich Piana was a former Mr. California.
  • The prize for professional bodybuilding shows are rarely economically sustaining amounts.
  • They are 'professional' because they promote food supplements such as protein powders or ergogenic agents such as creatine phosphate for vitamin and food supplement companies.
  • Many, such as Rich Piana, also have a multitude of devoted YouTube followers. This can brings in lucrative advertising income.
  • In these videos enough iron can be lifted to build a skyscraper.
  • The monstrously muscled bodies are most likely due to more than just food supplements. You think?

I have watched some of Rich Piana's YouTube videos. He has this likable charisma that has made his video postings popular with the bodybuilding subculture. Unlike Tour de France bicyclists or track and field athletes, Rich Piana was refreshingly honest about his use of copious amounts of performance enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids, human growth hormone, synthol oil and even the non diabetic use of insulin.
Refreshingly honest does not make it safe! The non medical use of  such drugs can have a myriad of health consequences. Last week Rich Piana collapsed at home and was taken to the emergency. Doctors put him into a medically induced coma to allow his body and brain to mend. Sadly, Rich Piana died today at the age of 47. His death may not have been due to the long term use of these substances but it is probable that there was some correlation. Many professional bodybuilders die young these days.
Professional bodybuilding is not about health or fitness! It has become about the search to attain an unnatural shape and size of the human musculature. You have professional bodybuilders who are 5 feet 6 inches tall and weigh 300 pounds. The bones, ligaments and heart were not designed to carry around that amount of muscle. The purpose of skeletal muscle is to move the bones through a range of motion around a joint - not to get so large that movement is compromised..
Even traditional old school bodybuilding exercises are not always the best for fitness or movement. Many bodybuilding exercises isolate muscles for the purpose of hypertrophy or muscle enlargement. Fitness or sports weight training is about developing muscle movements which may require synchronization of numerous muscle groups. Some muscle size can be desirable but not at the expense of movement or function.
I don't mean to totally bash professional bodybuilding. Professional boxing or the UFC require great athleticism but it is not about health or fitness when they batter each other senseless. Football quarterbacks are usually super coordinated physical phenomenons but  the goal of the opposing team is to tackle them with as much force as possible. That can't be healthy either. Hockey goalies have frozen rubber discs propelled at them at 100 miles per hour as well as 220 pound players crashing their crease. Baseball pitchers destroy shoulders and elbows .Runners can tear hamstring muscles. Soccer players can blow out their ACL joints at the knee. All professional sports carry a certain amount of risk.
The modern version of pro bodybuilding just seems to carry far more risk than reward!

Oxylicious - The Oxytocin Cookbook that Makes You Lose Weight and be Happy

About a year ago I applied for a 'ghostwriter' job with a New York City based  fitness website run by a well known Fitness Trainer who also blogs for the Huffington Post. The Huffington Post is the world's number 1 ranked bog site so if selected I would be part of an elite fitness company. The hiring coordinator liked my submitted blog samples and writing style.
She gave me the task of writing about something with this title; "Oxylicious"The Oxytocin Cookbook that Makes You Lose Weight and be Happy.  I am not a dietitian or nutritionist but I do believe in the health benefits of sensible eating habits. However I am not a big believer in magic super foods or heal - everything diets. My forte is to write about current sports conditioning or fitness training fads and facts with the occasional dart projected towards fitness phonies. This title would stretch me past my comfort level but I decided to go for it.  Here is the article that I submitted.
.......................................................................................................................................................

“OXYLICIOUS” - The Oxytocin Cookbook that Makes You Lose Weight and Be Happy

Finally, we have what you want. That dream ingredient that will lead to weight loss and happiness.
Unfortunately, there is a downside. Your teeth will fall out and you will need to break into houses to support your habit. Oh, wait – my mistake. That's Oxycontin, a much abused pharmaceutical painkiller
that is extremely addictive. Oxycontin is also known as 'Hillbilly Heroin' since it has been used by the low rental crowd as a substitute for certain illegal narcotics. For that you need need to go to
the 'Breaking Bad' website. Hopefully you don't feel the need to do that.
The substance that I meant to discuss is Oxytocin.  This is also an extraordinary substance.
Oxytocin is a hormone that is produced by the Hypothalmus
It is secreted by the Posterior Pituitary Gland by way of neural stimulation.
Oxytocin is known as the 'cuddle hormone' and the 'happiness hormone' because it creates feelings of intimacy, trust, bonding and supposedly fidelity. Could a shortage of this hormone be a factor (or an excuse) for a cheating spouse?
Oxytocin may lessen the reaction of fear as a response to a threatening stimulus.
Oxytocin is released during childbirth to aid in the contraction of the uterus.
This hormone stimulates lactation after birth.
Oxytocin increases the bonding of a mother to her newborn. Could a lack of oxytocin production be a factor in postpartum depression?
Oxytocin as a medication can be used during childbirth to induce greater contractions of the uterus for problem births.
Oxytocin may have some anti-inflammatory properties and act as an agent in healing wounds.
This hormone can increase arousal during orgasm!

It would seem as though Oxytocin is something that is good to have in abundance. Why not
create a diet that will ensure a constant supply of this happiness hormone? Hence my title
Oxylicious – The Oxytocin Cookbook that Makes You Lose Weight and be Happy”.
It would only make sense to eat foods that would keep this chemical circulating throughout your body.
It sounds great, doesn't it? “What's for dinner? I want to juice up the neurotransmitters of my brain.”
Now for the diet. What are the best foods to increase my oxytocin levels? After much research I then realized “Houston, we have a problem!” There are no foods that contain oxytocin. There are also no known supplements that affect how much oxytocin is released by the posterior pituitary gland.
As for weight loss, there has been no strong connection proven between this hormone and weight loss.
It is also unknown and not yet proven as to whether or not exercise has an effect on Oxytocin production.
“Why the misleading title?” you might ask. Well I wanted to get the your attention before you
fall for one of the many extreme or crazy food fads that are out there! People will try many useless and possibly dangerous diets in the hopes of getting healthy, losing weight or to magically pump up some naturally produced hormone.
However, all is not lost!  Even though foods do not contain oxytocin, there still may be a way to modify the diet to affect oxytocin secretion.
Eating enjoyable foods activates the vagal afferent nerves which stimulates the glands to release oxytocin into the system. This would imply that the meal should be a source of pleasure and joy. Some healthy foods such as Brussels Sprouts just may not make the cut in this case.
A diet of bland, boring food may also fail to do the job. How many happy people are there in jail?
Some people find eating junk food to be pleasurable. Binge eating during depression could be a search for some temporary oxytocin fix.
There is a possible link between a healthy gut environment and oxytocin secretion. Could a diet that includes probiotics be a part of the link?

Ideally, you want to find healthy foods that are also pleasurable to eat rather than eat fun junk food to stimulate oxytocin production. Forget the food fads! Try this real 'Oxylicious Diet'
Eat sensibly but strive for tasty meals.
Any diet that is not enjoyable is not sustainable over time. It is doomed to fail!
Many effective diets allow for a 'cheat' day, usually a Sunday' in which you can eat anything you want. This way you don't have to deprive yourself of family gatherings and holiday feasts.
Strive for a variety of vegetables and fruits in each meal plan.
Yogurt helps gut chemistry which may have a connection to oxytocin release.
Processed food should be kept to a minimum.
Snack on veggies instead of chips and candies.
Grandma's cookies are allowed but only on occasion.
If you are dining on healthy but tasty cuisine, you will have higher oxytocin levels and therefore less likely to binge eat on junk out of depression or despondency.
An active lifestyle including exercise with lots of time spent in the great outdoors is a necessary complement to the healthy eating if gradual weight loss is also a goal.

There are some non nutritional elements that can be used as seasoning. As stated earlier
neural stimulation also causes oxytocin to be release into the system. This can be caused by some possible joy inducing events such as:
1.      Hugging someone you love
2.      Cuddling someone
3.      Cuddling a pet animal
4.      Getting a massage
5.      Relaxing in a hot tub
6.      Being pregnant???? However the distress of an unplanned pregnancy may cause stress that counteracts with the happiness produced by the greater oxytocin release.
Could it also be possible that other positive actions such as;
Scoring a goal in hockey or soccer
    A super golf shot
Someone laughing at your jokes (I have trouble relating to this one. It rarely happens)
A super muscle pump after a weight training set,
also cause oxytocin to be released and add to the good feeling that results? As stated previously there has been no real scientific evidence linking exercise to oxytocin release. However the joy of a successful physical action could stimulate the release of this happiness hormone.
Yes, Oxylicious does exist. However it is not a quick fix, extreme diet.
It is a lifestyle of eating well, eating food that tastes good, and is best combined with an active lifestyle.
Oxylicious works best when seasoned with the company of people that love and enjoy your company.
Living well is the best natural hormone.

The hiring coordinator gave me positive feedback for the article but they never published it. It would have been my first paid work for them if they had. Since they didn't publish it, the article is now my property.
I think what froze my article was the obvious theme that I am a reluctant believer in super foods, fitness supplements and magic diets! I believe in sensible eating. Supplements are best used if the person has some condition that causes a deficiency of some vitamin, mineral or has a medically recognized food issue. Otherwise they can cause nutritional imbalances.  There is also little scientific support for the concept of magic diets that cure certain ailments or eliminate baldness or attract the perfect mate. I wish that it were all true!
I do believe that we should eat sensibly, drink water and keep junk foods to a minimum without totally depriving ourselves. Some supplements such as creatine phosphate can aid in strength training but more protein powder than the body needs is counterproductive. There is little evidence of natural foods that boost our ability to produce hormones. Health and fitness is a marathon - not a sprint!
My reluctance to espouse the total power of the 'Oxylicious' diet may have been why my submitted article was left in the dust bin. The mandate of this company is more accommodating to the belief in super foods and supplements. It is also possible that they didn't like my attempt to interject some humor. Either way, we are probably unlikely collaborators.
Check out Ben Greenfield Fitness. They seem to have a pulse on the message that people want to hear. You can't argue with their success. You just probably won't read anything 'ghostly' from me.

Barry Bond's Strength Coach: Fitness Trainer Hall of Shame -or Not ?

Can you sentence someone to the Fitness Trainer Hall of Shame when you actually feel some grudging admiration? That is my dilemma regarding Greg Anderson.  I have trouble completely condemning this man despite the abundance of evidence pointing towards guilt.
Who was Greg Anderson?
  • Greg Anderson was a weight room gym rat.
  • His father was killed during a gambling altercation when Greg was a child.
  • He grew up in the same neighborhood as future baseball home run king Barry Bonds.
  • Like many gym rats, Greg became the go-to guy for fellow weight training enthusiasts wanting to gain muscle or get stronger.
  • This morphed into a career as a Strength and Fitness Trainer despite Greg's lack of educational background or formal accreditation in the Fitness Training field.
  • Anointing the most muscular men as physical training experts was not uncommon in the hard core weight room environment.
The relationship between Greg Anderson and Baseball home run king Barry Bonds evolved from teenage acquaintanceship to something more professional.
  • Greg Anderson starting working in the weight room with Barry Bonds and became his weight training guru.
  • Barry Bonds morphed from a tall, wiry and talented athlete into a baseball bashing brute with cartoon like muscles and a pumpkin sized head under Anderson's guidance.
  • The gym where Greg trained his clients was only a few blocks from the headquarters for a health supplement company named the Bay Area Lab Cooperative. (BALCO)
  • BALCO founder, Victor Conte, was providing an undetectable steroid known as 'the Clear' to pro athletes in many sports. He also supplied the Clear to Greg Anderson.
  • Anderson also bought Human Growth Hormone from financially needy AIDS patients.
  • Presumably these substances were supplied to Greg Anderson's star client Barry Bonds.
  • After a tip from Olympic track star Marion Jones' disgruntled former coach, the internal Revenue Service and the Food and Drug Administration began investigating BALCO.
  • The ensuing fall out caught up to Greg Anderson and Barry Bonds.
  • Barry Bonds was indicted and tried with lying under oath.
  • Greg Anderson refused to testify against Bonds and spent 3 stints in jail for contempt of court.
  • Bonds was convicted but the conviction was later overturned.
  • Image result for barry bonds and greg anderson together
Barry Bonds (left) and Greg Anderson at court appearances
  • With the case concluded, Greg Anderson was off the hook for the contempt charges but remains with a criminal record for steroid trafficking. He has resumed Fitness Training for lower profile clients and as the go-to guy for aspiring gym rat/bodybuilders

Obviously, Greg Anderson was guilty of supplying banned substances to a client. That the client used these performance enhancing drugs to break a sacred baseball record compounds the story. Greg Anderson remained faithful to his client and repeatedly refused to testify against him at great cost to himself. Was this merely out of loyalty or will some financial payback be received from Barry Bonds in the future?
In some social circles Greg Anderson deserves street cred for not ratting out his friend and client. However in the eyes of the legal system such loyalty is considered a criminal act. Does Greg Anderson Belong in the Fitness Trainer Hall of Shame? You decide!
Despite a lack of educational credentials this subject is often referred to as a Fitness Trainer. The controversy and danger arises when such a person obtains supplements or substances for someone else. Not only is this beyond the scope of practice for a Fitness Trainer, in this case it entered the realm of unlawful activity

Until Next Time,  Keep Fit
Fitness Trainers beware! If you deal in illicit  substances or Performance Enhancing Drugs
you just might run afoul of the long arms (and/or legs)
of the law!

Melissa Bishop's International Racing Conundrum

I attended the 2017 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Ottawa last weekend. There was lots of running, lots of throwing, lots of jumping and lots of rain. There were some outstanding world class performances despite the inclement climate. Canadian sprint sensation Andre de Grasse ripped a sub twenty second 200 meters that wins the Canadian title but does not register as an official time due to a wind speed above 2 meters per second. Other events were most likely hampered by the conditions.
The women's 800 meter race featured local track star Melissa Bishop leading most of the way to a winning time just a shade over 2 minutes. The time was half a second better than my best time on the same track (different surface) a generation earlier. Of course I was running into a 20 mile per hour headwind wearing cement boots - or at least it felt like it. Okay, maybe her running form was more efficient and economical than my technique in my prime. She looked smooth and fast!

Image result for melissa bishop
Melissa Bishop taking the lead in an international race.

Melissa Bishop is a silver medalist from the 2015 World Championships. She finished 4th at the Olympics in Rio last year. Melissa is caught right in the middle of an international
track and field conundrum through no fault of her own. A gender issue that has surfaced numerous times in international sports has once again reared its head and become news.
Image result for caster semenya
Caster Samenya after winning
209 World Championships in Berlin.
Bishop's 800 meter race in Rio was won by Caster Semenya of South Africa. Melissa Bishop finished in 4th place. Since winning the 2009 World Championships, Semenya has been a controversial athlete. She has a form of hyperandrogenism which results in her producing more testosterone than women normally do. This likely gives her an advantage in competition since more testosterone means larger and stronger muscles. This physical benefit could be anywhere from 1.8% to up to 4% for female runners. This of course would put normal female runners such as Melissa Bishop at a disadvantage. There has also been some suggestion that the silver and bronze medalists from the same race also have hyperandrogenism.

Since 2009, the world sporting bodies such as the International Association of Athletics Federation (I.A.A.F) and the International Olympic Committee (I.O.C) allowed such athletes to compete  only if they took female hormones. In 2015 the Center for Arbitration in Sport (C.A.S) ruled that to be a violation of the athlete's rights. Semenya won silver medals in the 2011 World Championships and the 2012 Olympics while taking female hormones. She won the Rio Olympics last year while off of the female hormones. The rule to force female athletes with hyperandrogenism to take female hormones is under discussion for reinstatement. This controversy will continue.
Interestingly, the gold medal winner in the 2011 and 2012 races-a Russian woman- has since failed numerous drug tests for steroid enhancement. The world governing bodies were quick to act on Semenya after her 2009 win for natural but high testosterone levels but seemingly turned a blind eye for decades to unethical testosterone enhancement by eastern bloc countries and their political descendants. Sport is not always fair!  However, Caster Semenya may yet wind up with 2 more gold medals retroactively.
There are many considerations that are aligned with this issue:
  • Caster Semenya did not intentionally try to get an unfair advantage unlike her Russian competitor who  was outright cheating.
  • Some may argue that all great athletes have some genetic advantage over the norm. Gretzky had magical perception and coordination. Phelps seems to have flippers for feet.  Basketball players are twice my height. Usain Bolt has no evident slow twitch muscle fibers.  Soccer players have more natural acting ability than Meryl Streep when trying to draw a penalty. Baseball players can wash chewing tobacco down with gutrot whiskey and not gag! Us mere mortals are humbled by such genetic physical genius.
  • We are in an era when some people want to be addressed as Meh rather than as Mister, Ms., or Mrs.  Sport will not be immune from such issues in the future.
  • Some view this as another attempt by men in power of trying to define what women should look like.
  • Some men who have transgendered to  become women will want to compete against them. Wasn't there a male who became a woman named Renee Richards and tried for the women's professional tennis tour some time back?
  • Should former Olympic Decathlon champ Bruce Jenner, now Kaitlyn Jenner,  come back and try and capture the women's Heptathlon crown, I am confident that Canadian Brienne Thiessen Eaton would kick his/her butt. Hey - they're both retired from track and field so it's a valid analogy and a moot point!
  • Were I to pull a Kaitlyn Jenner and try to dominate women's wrestling Canadian Olympic Champion Erika Wiebbe would absolutely demolish me! (Ouch!)
  • More men becoming transgender women will want to compete against women. What will happen then?

Keep Fit!
